Vegan Chocolate Smoothie recipe

This vegan chocolate smoothie is creamy, sweet, delicious, and healthy!

VEGAN CHOCOLATE SMOOTHIE RECIPE

I love chocolate! I also eat whole food, plant-based. So, there isn’t much I can buy off the shelf at the store that is tasty, chocolaty, and good for me.

I also don’t like bananas. Many of the vegan chocolate smoothie or milkshake recipes I found online have bananas as an ingredient.

Other recipes include sugar or artificial sweetener as well. That’s why I’m thrilled with this recipe!

This vegan chocolate smoothie tastes like a milkshake to me. It’s so good that I drink it 3 or 4 times a week for breakfast.

I also drink it at other times during the day when I want something sweet! This smoothie also keeps me full for hours.

This smoothie is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth while providing your body with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that will give you an energy boost!

It’s nice to have something that is healthy and tastes great at the same time.

This smoothie is:

  • Plant-based

  • Vegan

  • Gluten-free

  • Refined sugar-free

  • Free of artificial sweeteners

When I tell some people about this recipe, they’re hesitant to try it at first because of the sweet potatoes. And honestly, I was hesitant to try it at first, too.

But the sweet potatoes make it so good! And the sweet potatoes also give the smoothie a nice creaminess.

I encourage you to give it a try with the sweet potatoes. But if you would rather skip the sweet potatoes, you can substitute frozen bananas.

More About the Ingredients

I share nutritional information about the ingredients in this recipe so that you know the positive impact of different foods on your body.

When you eat these foods often, and in place of highly processed foods, you will see an improvement in your health!

Sweet potatoes have many health benefits, including sweet potatoes are:

  • Full of vitamins and minerals

  • Loaded with fiber, which keeps you fuller longer. This results in a lower intake of calories daily.

  • High in antioxidants. Antioxidants can help fight inflammation. Inflammation can often be a factor in difficulty losing weight. Antioxidants can also help with premature aging.

  • Good for gut health. Having good gut health can help with weight loss, among other benefits

You can add more unsweetened cocoa powder to intensify the chocolate flavor. Cocoa powder is excellent nutritionally because it:

  • Is a powerful antioxidant

  • Can help stabilize blood sugar. This can help with weight management, among other things.

  • May improve your mood

  • May aid in weight control. This works by reducing your appetite, reducing inflammation, and increasing your feeling of fullness

The dates are added in place of refined sugar. You can add more than the recipe calls for to make the smoothie sweeter. I love using dates because they are:

  • Loaded with antioxidants

  • Full of vitamins and minerals

  • High in fiber

  • Can give you an energy boost

  • A natural sweetener. You can also buy date syrup and date sugar.

Tip: Putting the dates in the blender first will help them get chopped up easier.

You can use plain unsweetened almond, soy, or cashew milk for the plant-based milk. I alternate between using soy milk and almond milk. Soy milk is higher in protein than other plant-based milk.

If you are trying to lose weight, I don’t recommend using coconut milk, as it is higher in fat. Coconut milk is usually used in smaller amounts for cooking rather than larger quantities in smoothies.

You can use almond butter or peanut butter.

I like to use almond butter because it is:

  • High in protein

  • Rich vitamin E, which is an antioxidant

  • Contains healthy fats

  • High in fiber, which can keep you fuller longer. The result is a lower intake of calories daily.

  • Helps stabilize blood sugar.

Look for nut butter free of sugar, salt, and oil.

The cinnamon compliments the sweet potatoes nicely. I love cinnamon. Some of the benefits of cinnamon include the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Good at regulating blood sugar

  • High in antioxidants

Adding flaxseeds is optional. I add flaxseed because of the health benefits.

Flaxseeds:

  • Are high in fiber

  • Are low calorie

  • Contain omega-3 fatty acids

  • Have several important vitamins and minerals

  • Can help stabilize blood sugar

The garbanzo beans are also listed as optional. They’ll add thickness to your smoothie. They also give the smoothie an added creaminess, and you cannot taste them at all! Garbanzo beans are:

  • Rich in plant protein

  • Packed with vitamins and minerals

  • High in fiber

  • Can help stabilize blood sugar

  • Good for digestion

Blender

A high-speed blender works best with this recipe. A high-speed blender, such as a Vitamix Blender, is a great investment for making smoothies, but it can also do so much more in the kitchen!

I had a non-high-speed blender for years before getting a high-speed blender. The high-speed blender was worth every penny! It makes a difference in the textures of your smoothies.

Vegan Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

Servings: 1

Ingredients (see notes above for details on the ingredients):

Directions:

  1. Place the dates in the blender first (I recommend using a high-speed blender).

  2. Add the other ingredients to the blender. Blend until smooth.

  3. If you prefer your smoothie to be thinner, add more plant-based milk. If you would like it thicker, add less plant-based milk.

  4. Pour your smoothie into a glass and enjoy!
