Fertility can be a difficult and complex topic to navigate.

There’s so much information out there, from medical tests to dietary changes, that sometimes it’s overwhelming trying to figure out what you should actually do when trying to get pregnant.

But even though tech advances and modern medicine have come a long way in helping us understand fertility better, some of the most effective solutions around are often surprisingly simple – like this one: keeping your feet warm!

While unusual on the surface, it’s one of the many things I did when I conceived my rainbow baby, and this tip has helped many others too!

Let’s look at why this works according to traditional Chinese medicine and tips on how to make sure your feet stay warm when trying to conceive.

How do Cold Feet Affect Fertility?

When it comes to fertility, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) takes a holistic approach, focusing on the entire body and how it interacts with the environment.

One important aspect of this is the concept that coldness can have a negative impact on fertility, particularly when it comes to the feet.

In TCM, the feet are seen as an extension of the uterus and reproductive organs.

When our feet are cold, it constricts the blood vessels, limiting flow and leading to poor circulation.

This lack of blood flow can affect the uterus, making it harder for it to function properly and decreasing the likelihood of conception.

The kidney channel is very important in TCM when it comes to fertility.

In TCM, the kidneys are associated with reproductive health and are said to play a key role in regulating the body’s circadian rhythm and immune system functioning.

A kidney yang deficiency can impact egg quality, the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle, and cervical mucus production.

Being cold, in general, can also have a negative effect on fertility.

Cold temperatures can cause the muscles in the uterus and surrounding areas to contract, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg or for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.

In TCM, warmth and circulation are crucial for reproductive health, particularly when it comes to the hormone progesterone.

Progesterone levels play a key role in regulating the menstrual cycle and creating a healthy uterine lining for pregnancy.

When the uterus is too cold, it can negatively impact progesterone production and make it harder to conceive or maintain a pregnancy.

So, it’s a good idea for pregnant women to keep warm feet too!

Tips for Keeping Your Feet Warm and Boosting Fertility

When it comes to fertility, keeping your feet warm can play an important role in supporting reproductive health.

Here are some tips for warming up those tootsies:

  • Grab a hot water bottle. A hot water bottle is a simple and effective way to warm up cold feet. Fill it with hot (but not boiling) water and place it at the foot of the bed to keep toes toasty all night long.
  • Always wear socks. Warm socks are a must when it comes to keeping your feet warm. Opt for thicker wool or thermal socks for extra insulation. You can even wear warm compression socks!
  • Use a heating pad. If you’re struggling with cold feet at night, try placing a heating pad on your feet for 10-15 minutes before bed. Just be sure to use a low or medium heat setting to avoid burning your skin.
  • Soak your feet. A warm foot soak can help improve circulation and promote warmth throughout the body. Add some Epsom salts or essential oils like ginger or cinnamon to make it extra cozy.
  • Avoid flip-flops. While tempting in warmer weather, flip-flops can leave feet exposed to cold surfaces and chilly breezes. Opt for closed-toe shoes or boots instead.

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can help boost blood flow to the reproductive organs, support hormone balance for optimal fertility, and boost chances of conception.

So, go ahead and slip on those fuzzy socks – your feet (and uterus!) will thank you.

What are Some Other Ways to Keep My Uterus Warm for Fertility?

Here are some bonus tips for keeping your uterus warm:

  • Use a hot water bottle or heating pad on your lower abdomen. This can be a great way to warm up the uterus, specifically promoting blood circulation.
  • Dress warmly in cold weather. Don’t underestimate the power of a cozy sweater or scarf! Keeping your body warm overall can help promote warmth in your reproductive organs. Also, avoid being outside in the cold for a long time.
  • Avoid cold swimming pools. Cold water can cause the muscles in the uterus and pelvic area to contract, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.
  • Consider acupuncture. Acupuncture can help improve circulation and help in balancing hormonal changes, making it a great option for those looking to warm up their uterus. It can also be used with Chinese herbs to further support fertility.
  • Limit cold foods. Raw food, salads, ice-cold smoothies, ice cream, and other cold foods can cool down the body internally. Instead, opt for warming foods like soups, warm whole grains like oatmeal, and dishes made with warming herbs like ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon.

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can help keep your uterus warm and support overall reproductive health.

Note: Avoid high heat directly to the uterus, such as from heating pads or hot tubs during the two-week wait or if you suspect you may be in early pregnancy. The high temperatures can have negative effects on pregnancy.
